This beautiful country has many areas where natural forces can be easily seen, and we have worked with Geoworks to provide tours that are adapted to a school’s curriculum. This means your students can benefit from a rewarding trip with education at the heart. Edventure Travel tours to Scotland can be adapted to suit your subject. This is a Geology study tour which will examine the impressive geological formations in Scotland. Edventure Travel in partnership with Geoworks has created this itinerary to provide an exciting educational trip that can be adapted to your group and curriculum.

  1. Day 1 Arrival

    Take your flight or coach to Inverness in Scotland and arrive in the afternoon. You will meet your guide and transfer to your accommodation.

    Take an evening meal and the walk to Acheninver Beach for an introductory Geology session.

  2. Day 2 Knockan Crag

    Travel to Knockan Crag where you will look at the geology with your guide. You can stop at Rockstop Cafe at Unapool before visiting the North West Highlands Geopark with an educational talk.

    Visit Scourie where you will examine the examples of Igneous Intrusions and Lewisian Gneiss.

    Return to your accommodation for an evening meal and take a 1-hour talk on the great controversy regarding Moine Thrust.

  3. Day 3 Ullapool

    Visit Ullapool and the surround area for the day where you will undertake geological mapping activities.

    Drive to Stac Pollaidh and take an evening climb up Stac Pollaidh with a local mountain guide.

  4. Day 4 Clachtoll Beach

    Visit Clachtoll Beach, explore the unconformity between the Lewisian and Torridonian, and visit the Stac Fada Meteorite impact site.

    Continue to Stoer Point and take your lunch in the field looking at glacial deposits alongside the road cuttings. Take a brief stop in Lochinver for tea and pies at the Pie Shop.

    Take a walk up to view Cambrian quartzite and glacial striations and discover the various geological features on Quinag.

    Free time after your meal this evening.

  5. Day 5 Return Home

    Check out of your accommodation and make your return journey home via coach or flight.

  1. Knockan Crag Scotland

    Visit Knocken Crag National Nature Reserve with Edventure Travel and discover this globally important geological site where your students can get excited about rocks and geology and where they will discover the amazing story of colliding continents and scientific intrigue. The low cliff of Knockan exposes rocks that set the scientific world ablaze in the 19th century with the discovery that a slice of old rock sits on top of much younger ones. The Moine Thrust, as it is known, was created by the force of two continents crashing together many millions of years ago. Explore the Reserve through the Rock Room, Rock trails Art, and the breathtaking scenery.

  2. Stac Pollaidh Scotland

    Treat your school group to a visit of the Northwest Highlands of Scotland and see Stac Pollaidh. This peak has many pinnacles and steep gullies and displays a rocky crest of chocolate-red sandstone. Climbing Stac Pollaidh shows off this area at its very best. You can traverse the relatively straightforward terrain, with just the final ascent being very steep to reach the ridge, to see the panoramic views over Loch Lugainn; the Summer Isles in the mouth of Loch Broom; the beautiful Inverpolly Nature Reserve; and the peaks of Assynt. You might even spot a golden eagle or red deer!

  3. Clachtoll Beach Scotland

    Clachtoll Beach is an unspoilt paradise in the Highlands with its rugged terrain, including the Split Rocks. Your group will be impressed with the beutiful white sands and tranquil turquoise water and they can enjoy the stunning mountain views from the headlands at either end of the beach. Your students can learn about the wildlife, geology and history of the beach in the ranger’s hut.

  4. Edinburgh Castle Scotland

    When your group visits Edinburgh Castle, they will discover how it dominates the skyline of Scotland’s capital city from its position on the Castle Rock. Your students can discover the Royal Palace or Mons Meg or the Scottish National War Memorial.  They can visit the magnificent Great Hall with its wooden roof and giant beams resting on stones with heads and symbols, and see the displays of weapons, armour, swords, shields and the famous Lochaber axe which was feared by all!
