Bay of Naples
Enjoy a guided excursion to the geographical sites of the Phlegrean Fields, a large volcanic area comprising an 8-mile-wide caldera located on the western outskirts of Naples and the Gulf of Pozzuoli. You will enjoy a guided visit of Herculaneum, buried in mud in the same cataclysm that destroyed Pompeii and whose ruins reveal a vanished civilization.
Pompeii and Vesuvius
Today you will visit Vesuvius and Pompeii. Start with an exciting hike to the summit of Vesuvius. Standing next to the crater’s edge you might see steaming vents. Hike around the crater rim and get some spectacular views of Naples and the Bay. In the afternoon you head to the famous Roman ruins at Pompeii for a guided tour, which gives an idea of Roman life before the eruption of 79 AD which buried it under a thick layer of pumice and ash.
Today is a full day visit to the beautiful island of Capri with a guide. You travel by hydrofoil from Sorrento for the 30-minute sea crossing. Capri is comprised of limestone and used to be joined to mainland Italy’s Amalfi Coast. View the vineyards, olive groves, citrus fruits, world-famous sea stacks and the natural arch.

Bay of Naples
Pompeii is a vast archaeological site in southern Italy which was once a thriving and sophisticated Roman city until it was buried under a thick carpet of volcanic ash and pumice after the disastrous eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. Your group will be able to explore this preserved site and discover the excavated ruins of streets and houses where 2000 people died. Students will see how Fiorelli and his team poured plaster into the soft cavities in the ash, to create the preserved bodies at Pompeii. The original site of Pompeii is too fragile for people to live but there is a modern town of Pompeii nearby.
Bay of Naples
Vesuvius has erupted many times since the catastrophic eruption of 79 A.D, but the last one, in 1944, makes it the only volcano on the European mainland to have erupted within the last hundred years. Today, it is regarded as one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world because of the proximity to the city of Naples and surrounding towns with a population of 3 million people. Vesuvius is just 6 miles from Naples and most school trips link a half day at Pompeii with a visit to Mount Vesuvius.
Naples Archaeological Museum
Bay of Naples
The National Archaeological Museum of Naples is a particularly important Italian archaeological museum for its ancient Roman remains. Your students will discover collections from Greek, Roman and Renaissance times, and especially the Roman artefacts from nearby Pompeii, Stabiae and Herculaneum. Your group will be able to view many of the highlights: including the Farnese Sculptures and Gems; Mosaics from Pompeii and Herculaneum; Frescos from Pompeii and Herculaneum; the Secret Room; Decorative Art and Household Objects from Pompeii and Herculaneum and the Egyptian Collection.
Bay of Naples
The Phlegraean Fields volcanic region, also known as Campi Flegrei (meaning ”burning fields” in Italian), is a large supervolcano. Situated to the west of Naples, it was declared a regional park in 2003. The area of the caldera consists of 24 craters and volcanic edifices. You will discover that most of these lie under water, which then creates the hydrothermal activity that your students will observe at Lucrino, Agnano and the town of Pozzuoli. Supervolcanoes, such as the one responsible for the geothermal features of Yellowstone, is not a single volcanic cone. Your students will feel the ground move, the earth shake, and see the scalding, stinking steam rising from the hissing fissures in one of the most seismically active volcanic landscapes on Earth.
Bay of Naples
Like its sister city, Pompeii, Herculaneum is famous for having been buried in ash during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. Although this is a much smaller city, its ruins are better preserved, and your students will see more complete homes and mosaics due to the unique way that its ruins are preserved. It is one of the few ancient cities to be preserved more or less intact, with no later additions or changes.
Bay of Naples
Capri is an island in Italy’s Bay of Naples and is famous for its craggy landscape, glamorous hotels; world class shopping; designer fashions; limoncello and handmade leather sandals. Your group could visit the Blue Grotto which is one of its best-known natural sites and consists of a dark cavern where the sea glows electric blue. This beautiful effect is the result of sunlight passing through an underwater cave. If your visit is during the summer months, your students will enjoy Capri’s dramatic, cove-studded coastline and see the many luxury yachts belonging to the many celebrities that visit the natural beauty of this amazing island.
